Ryan Fire Safety - Exit Signs, Emergency Lighting and Labels
Exit Signs and Emergency Lighting
In the unfortunate event that a fire has expanded beyond the parameters of safety that a fire extinguisher can provide, Ryan Safety Services offers a variety of emergency lights and exit signs that direct the way to safety per OSHA code 29 CFR 1910.37, which indicates:
- (a)(4) - Safeguards such as exit lighting which are designed to protect employees during an emergency must be functional at all times.
- (b)(1) - Each exit route must be sufficiently lighted for employees with normal vision to see along the exit route.
- (b)(2) - Each exit must be clearly marked by a visible sign reading "Exit."
- (b)(3) - Each exit route door must be free of anything obstructing the visibility of the exit route door.
- (b)(4) - If the exit's direction of travel is not obvious, then signs indicating the travel direction must be posted along the exit access which directs to the nearest exit and exit discharge. Additionally, the line-of-sight to an exit sign must be in plain view at all times.
- (b)(5) – Any and all doorways or routes along an exit access that may be misidentified as an exit must be marked "Not an Exit" or similarly designated, or identified by a sign indicating its actual use (e.g., closet).
- (b)(6) – Every exit sign must be illuminated to a surface value of at least five foot-candles (54 lux) by a reliable light source and be distinctive in color. Self-luminous or electroluminescent signs that have a minimum luminance surface value of at least .06 footlamberts (0.21 cd/m2) are permitted.
- (b)(7) – All exit signs must have the word "Exit" in clear, legible letters at least six inches (15.2 cm) high, with the principal letter strokes in the word "Exit" at least three-fourths of an inch (1.9 cm) wide.
- (c) – Fire retardant paints or solutions must be renewed as required to sustain their fire retardant properties.
Rest assured, Ryan Safety Services will assist you with meeting the compliance standards of every OSHA and fire regulation applicable to your industry.
